HOP Energy Seeking Pennsylvania Electric License

Email This Story
December 14, 2010

HOP Energy, LLC, which operates several fuel oil distributors in eastern Pennsylvania, applied for a Pennsylvania electric generation supplier and aggregator license to serve all customer classes.

HOP Energy is likely to receive a Connecticut supplier license this week after a favorable draft decision, and also received a Massachusetts electric license earlier this month(12/9).

In Pennsylvania, HOP Energy said that it will market fixed price and variable price full requirements electric supplies to its existing residential and commercial oil customers, and will also structure customer-specific electric supply products as needed.

HOP Energy hopes to eventually expand its marketing efforts to new customers who are not purchasing oil from the company.

Initially, HOP Energy applied to serve customers at PECO, PPL Electric, and Met-Ed, in whose territories it operates its fuel oil business under the brands of Altemos/Atlantic Energy, Brinkers Energy, DDM Energy and Major Oil.

HOP Energy hopes to expand its marketing efforts into other utility territories at some point in the future.

Residential customers constitute the primary focus of HOP Energy's fuel oil business, which also includes the installation and maintenance of furnaces, heating, air conditioning, and ancillary equipment in addition to fuel supply.

HOP Energy said that it will use internal staff, licensed brokers, and external third parties not requiring an EGS license in its marketing efforts.  HOP Energy will not conduct door-to-door sales.

HOP Energy has entered into an agreement for customer care and telemarketing services with Affinitas Corporation.  EC Infosystems will handle EDI functions, enrollment, and billing.

HOP Energy reported that EDI testing has been completed with Nstar in Massachusetts, and said that testing is currently underway with National Grid in Massachusetts as well.  EDI testing has been completed with both Connecticut utilities.

In addition to Stephen Fabiani, who is leading HOP Energy's electric supply operations (7/22), HOP Energy disclosed that Sarah Kelly will serve as electric operations and markets manager.  Kelly has held senior marketing positions with U.S. Gas & Electric, Gateway Energy Services, and Hess Corporation.

HOP Energy confirmed in its Pennsylvania application that its target electric markets include the Mid-Atlantic, New England and New York regions, as noted by Matters in July.

HOP Energy's oil distribution operations include 85,000 residential and commercial customers in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland.  HOP delivers and manages in excess of 125 million gallons of oil.
