Michigan Gas Choice Participation Again Hits All-Time High

Email This Story
January 27, 2011

The Michigan PSC yesterday reported that the number of gas choice customers in Michigan has reached an all-time high since the program became available to customers in 2001 and 2002.  The announcement follows 2009 being a record year for gas choice as well.

"Natural gas customers in record numbers are availing themselves of the choice they have to become customers of an alternative gas supplier," noted MPSC Chairman Orjiakor Isiogu.  "Although the MPSC does not regulate these companies' rates, it does have two helpful consumer alerts available to help natural gas customers understand the issue before signing any contract."

In December 2010, the number of gas choice customers reached 445,071.  The number of gas choice customers has risen steadily each month since October 2009, when 377,955 customers were enrolled in gas choice programs.  December 2010 gas volumes also set a record, with 78.275 billion cubic feet (Bcf) in annualized sales reported statewide.  Gas volumes have risen almost every month since November 2009.
