Maryland PSC Further Modifies SOS Price Comparison Language

April 28, 2011

The Maryland PSC has accepted further revisions to the language concerning the SOS price comparison information to be included on bills (Case 9228).

The Commission essentially adopted the language of the Pepco Holdings utilities, which was endorsed by several stakeholders.

The price comparison language will now read:

"The current price for Standard Offer Service (SOS) electricity is x.x cents/kWh, effective through [date]. SOS electricity will cost x.x cents/kWh beginning on [date] through [date]. The weighted average price of SOS electricity will be x.x cents/kWh through [date]. The price for SOS from [date] through [date] will be set in [month year].

The language essentially provides more specificity in terms of the start and end dates for the listed prices versus the old language.

For cases in which, due to the timing of SOS procurements, SOS rates are known for more than one future period, the language will be as follows:

"The current price for Standard Offer Service (SOS) electricity is x.x cents/kWh, effective through [date]. SOS electricity will cost x.x cents/kWh beginning on [date] through [date]. SOS electricity will cost x.x cents/kWh beginning on [date] through [date]. The weighted average price of SOS electricity will be x.x cents/kWh through [date]. The price for SOS from [date] through [date] will be set in [month year]."

Utilities were ordered to use the new language with the June bills, and the PSC declined Pepco's request for a July effective date.
