RECs retired by retail electric providers in ERCOT for voluntary renewable products exceeded RECs retired for RPS compliance for the third consecutive year, ERCOT reported Friday.

ERCOT reported that 11.83 million RECs were retired in the voluntary market in 2010, a 45 percent increase over 2009's record of 8.94 million.

In comparison, 9.03 million RECs were retired by the state's 168 competitive retail electricity providers in compliance with the state renewable portfolio standard.

A total of 20.86 million total RECs were retired in 2010, compared to 15.7 million in 2009 and 13.5 million in 2008.

Total Texas competitive load was 245,416,659 MWh in 2010.

ERCOT's annual REC program report is available here and is also filed in PUCT Project 27706.

The report includes the unredacted 2009 RPS compliance obligations of each REP.
