Viridian Begins Service as Cincinnati Bell Energy

Viridian Energy has begun offering electric supply at Duke Energy Ohio as Cincinnati Bell Energy.

Viridian's use of the Cincinnati Bell Energy name in Ohio was first reported in Matters (5/18).

Viridian uses the Cincinnati Bell Energy name under a license agreement with Cincinnati Bell Inc. Viridian declined discuss the arrangement, or any details on its offering, ahead of a formal release.

Viridian is currently offering a 100% wind, monthly variable product to residential RS customers at Duke Energy Ohio with guaranteed savings over the initial 12 months.

If the customer does not realize savings over the first 12 months of service, Viridian will refund the customer 120% of the difference between what the customer would have paid for electricity service if enrolled with Duke Energy Ohio and what the customer actually paid while enrolled with Viridian. Viridian's terms of service is silent with respect to what Duke Energy Ohio rate shall be used in this calculation, but such silence presumably means the Standard Service Offer rate will be used, and not the SSO rate plus Duke's optional wind adder, as is used in Viridian's pricing comparison.

Customers must submit copies of their bills for 12 months to Viridian in order to redeem any savings guarantee.

The introductory and June 2011 rate for the product is 5.99 cents per kilowatt-hour. Viridian compares this to Duke Energy Ohio's rate of 9.04 cents per kWh for its optional GoGreen product, listing savings as 34%. Viridian also lists the June rate as 25% lower than Duke Energy Ohio's standard rate of 8.04 cents per kWh.
