Pa. PUC Grants Temporary Waiver from Budget Billing to Constellation NewEnergy

The Pennsylvania PUC granted Constellation NewEnergy's request for a temporary waiver of the budget billing requirement at 52 Pa. Code Sec. 56.12(7) until Dec. 31, 2011. The waiver request, first reported by Matters (5/9), is to allow Constellation time to implement average billing functionality that can be used across states and utilities, and that will comply with various states' regulatory rules. Constellation expects to complete its budget billing solution by the end of 2011.

Stream Energy Recognized as Top Workplace

Stream Energy has been recognized by Workplace Dynamics as having achieved the national standard of Top Workplaces for 2011. This designation was awarded in recognition of the firm's results from an employee workplace survey conducted earlier this year. "It is humbling to be recognized for our efforts at providing our employees with a high quality work environment," said Stream Energy Chairman Rob Snyder. "We recognize that we have an obligation to take care of our people, given how much time and effort employees devote each day to their jobs," Snyder said.

FirstEnergy Generation Completes Fremont Energy Center Sale

FirstEnergy Generation Corp. has completed the sale of the Fremont Energy Center in Fremont, Ohio, to American Municipal Power, Inc. (AMP) for more than $500 million. The two companies entered into a definitive purchase agreement for the facility in March 2011. The sale is consistent with FirstEnergy's efforts to divest non-strategic assets and use the proceeds to provide the company with additional financial strength and flexibility. The Fremont Energy Center, completed earlier this month, is a natural gas combined cycle generation plant with two natural gas turbines and a steam turbine capable of producing 544 megawatts (MW) of load-following capacity and 163 MW of peaking capacity. FirstEnergy acquired the partially complete plant in January 2008 from Calpine Corporation in that company's bankruptcy proceeding.
