PPL Electric Utilities saw in the most recent week its first decline in migrated residential accounts since the Pennsylvania PUC began posting weekly migration statistics.

Matters has also compiled a comparison of the migration levels from the 8/24/11 Report versus the 8/17/11 Report, as well as comparing the rate of migration in each of the past two weeks.

Specifically, for the period from Aug. 14 through Aug. 20, PPL recorded a net decrease of 22 migrated residential customers.

It's the first net decline in PPL residential migration since the start of weekly migration reports in late March, and also the only decline in residential migration at any of the major utilities during that time (Pike County has seen a net loss of 130 residential shoppers since late March, and UGI lost its sole migrated residential customer during the period).

The decline at PPL likely reflects the leading edge of Dominion Retail's decision to return to default service approximately 8,500 customers who had been on monthly variable rates and whose contracts had expired (although the precise drop, meter read, and switch dates are not known; The Patriot-News quoted one customer as having a return date of Sept. 12).

In the immediately preceding week (Aug. 7-13), PPL had recorded a net gain of 393 migrated residential customers, which was down from a gain of 1,300 two weeks ago and may also have been impacted by return of certain Dominion Retail customers.

Elsewhere, growth in residential accounts migrated at West Penn Power for the most recent week was 4,500, versus 5,100 a week ago and 6,000 two weeks ago. West Penn Power has crossed the 10% threshold for residential accounts migrated, with residential migration now standing at 10.5% of accounts (week-ago: 9.8%)

At PECO, the weekly gain in residential migration was nearly 2,600, versus nearly 2,900 a week ago.

Penelec saw nearly 2,100 new residential shoppers in the most recent week, versus a gain of 2,300 a week ago.
