Sperian Energy Eyeing Natural Gas Service, Network Marketing, Applies for New License

Sperian Energy Corp. intends to eventually expand to natural gas service, it said in applying for an Ohio electric supplier license.
Sperian applied to serve all customer classes in all service areas in Ohio. To date, it has focused on the mass market (in Pennsylvania, with a license in Illinois as well), and said that it intends to build up a stable book of small volume customers before marketing to larger commercial and industrial accounts.
Sperian said that it has a three year expansion plan to remain in the Northeast for reasons including, but not limited to, availability of POR, recent regulatory amendments promoting competitive supply, minimal market saturation, increasing end-user service transfers to competitive supply, as well as the removal of rate caps across multiple PJM territories.
Furthermore, Sperian said that it plans to enter the natural gas market in early 2013, after building a stable electric book.
Sperian is also researching the addition of a network marketing arm. "If accepted by the board, this channel will be implemented in Q3 or Q4 of 2012," Sperian said.
As of January 13, 2012, Sperian had a customer base of 723 residential and small business customers in the PECO and PPL markets, mostly acquired through incoming enrollments marketed through PA Power Switch and similar sites. Sperian, which launched Pennsylvania service in the fall of 2011, did not start an outbound marketing campaign until January 11, when it began outbound telemarketing. As of January 13, 2012, Sperian was purchasing 1 MWh during peak hours.
