TXU Energy has launched an electricity product offering energy charges of 0¢/kWh during the night.

TXU's Free Nights plan, offered for 18 or 24 months, is a three-tier Time of Use product, which includes a monthly base charge, a pass-through of TDU charges regardless of time of use, and the time-based energy charge.

The Time of Use periods are:

• Peak Hours: Between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays, Monday through Friday, during the calendar months of May through October except Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day.

• Off-Peak Hours: All hours during the calendar year not designated as Peak or Night hours.

• Night Hours: Between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. all days and all months of the year.

Though there are three TOU tiers, for the current offerings, the peak and off-peak rates are identical. The EFL also includes two distinct off-peak seasons (May to October, and November to April), but none of the offers differentiate the off-peak rate based on season at this time.

For the 18-month product in the Oncor area, the time-based energy charge is 12.0¢/kWh for peak and off-peak hours, and 0¢/kWh for night hours. The all-in average rate for 1,000 kWh is listed as 12.4¢/kWh.

For the 24-month product in the Oncor area, the time-based energy charge is 12.9¢/kWh for peak and off-peak hours, and 0¢/kWh for night hours. The all-in average rate for 1,000 kWh is listed as 13.1¢/kWh.

For the 18-month product in the CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric area, the time-based energy charge is 11.9¢/kWh for peak and off-peak hours, and 0¢/kWh for night hours. The all-in average rate for 1,000 kWh is listed as 13.7¢/kWh.

For the 24-month product in the CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric area, the time-based energy charge is 12.6¢/kWh for peak and off-peak hours, and 0¢/kWh for night hours. The all-in average rate for 1,000 kWh is listed as 14.2¢/kWh.

The energy charge for each TOU period is fixed for the term of the product.

The base charge for each product is $4.95 per month.

An early termination fee of $295 applies to each product.

TXU said that by shifting just 10 percent of their electricity use from daytime to nighttime, when energy charges are free, a customer with an average usage of 2,000 kWh/month can save about $200 a year.
