TXU Energy continued its significant improvement in customer churn during the three months ended September 30, 2012, according to an Energy Future Holdings 10-Q posted this morning.

From June 30, 2012 to September 30, 2012, TXU lost a net of only 12,000 residential customers, compared to the net loss of 25,000 from March 31, 2012 to June 30, 2012.

That's the lowest net loss of residential customers over a three month period since TXU last recorded net growth in its residential customer count, which last occurred during the three months ended March 31, 2009.

During the year-ago quarter, from June 30, 2011 to September 30, 2011, TXU had lost a net of 48,000 residential customers.

As of September 30, 2012, TXU was serving 1.566 million residential customers, compared to 1.578 million as of June 30, 2012, and 1.658 million a year ago.

Note, the EFH 10-Q lists TXU residential customer count as 1.566 million as of Sept. 30, 2012, but an investor presentation lists this number as 1.563 million. Matters uses the 10-Q figure for comparisons throughout this story

TXU's small business (< 1 MW) customer count stood at 176,000 meters as of September 30, 2012, versus 178,000 as of June 30, 2012 and 190,000 a year ago.

The net loss of 2,000 small business meters is about even with the net loss of 1,000 small business meters from March 31, 2012 to June 30, 2012, and a significant improvement over the loss 5,000-9,000 small business meters seen in other recent prior quarters.

TXU's large business customer count as of September 30, 2012 was 17,000 meters, versus 16,000 meters as of June 30, 2012, and 20,000 meters a year ago.

Total TXU retail customer count was 1.759 million meters as of September 30, 2012, versus 1.772 million meters as of June 30, 2012, and 1.868 million meters a year ago.
