Exclusive: NRG's Energy Rewards Says It Will Offer Combined Electric/Gas Bundle (Brand Currently Used for Comcast Offers)

NRG Energy's Independence Energy Group LLC d/b/a Energy Rewards intends to offer to Pennsylvania customers an offer bundling electric and natural gas supply, according to a regulatory filing.

Currently, Energy Rewards is the brand used by NRG Energy for its pilot electric offers made in conjunction with Comcast in western Pennsylvania.

Energy Rewards said in a filing with the Pennsylvania PUC that it is, "preparing contract documents for its combined electricity and natural gas product offers."

NRG said that Independence Energy Group, which was just licensed to sell natural gas in Pennsylvania, does not currently serve natural gas customers in Pennsylvania.

It was not clear if the future electric/gas bundle would be offered exclusively to Comcast subscribers as Energy Rewards' current offerings are. In seeking a gas supplier license, Energy Rewards did only seek to serve certain service areas surrounding Pittsburgh and in western Pennsylvania: People's Natural Gas Company, LLC, Equitable Gas Company, and Columbia Gas of PA, Inc.

NRG told EnergyChoiceMatters.com that, "NRG has been pleased to partner with Comcast on a pilot program offering electricity service to consumers in the Greater Pittsburgh area."

The filing with the PUC, "was made to prepare for potential opportunities in the future, but we have nothing to announce at this time," NRG told EnergyChoiceMatters.com

In the filing, Energy Rewards has sought clarification of the renewal notification timelines for gas and electric customers, given what it sees as an inconsistency in the current rules.

Specifically, Energy Rewards said that the notice provisions for natural gas in 52 Pa. Code § 62.75.(g)(1) require two notices to be sent -- one at 90 days and the second at 60 days -- prior to the expiration of a natural gas contract to explain the customer's contract renewal options.

In contrast, the Commission's recently adopted electricity rules in docket L-2014-2409385 (52 Pa. Code § 54.10.(a)(1) and (2)) require an initial notice to be sent 45-60 days prior to an electric contract expiration and an options notice to be sent at least 30 days prior to contract expiration.

"In trying to comply with all of these notice timeline requirements, Energy Rewards is concerned that sending four notices to a customer taking service under a combined electricity and natural gas contract will cause unnecessary confusion and result in a poor shopping experience for the customer. As such, Energy Rewards would like to minimize customer confusion by sending notices to customers taking combined electricity and natural gas service from Energy Rewards in accordance with the contract expiration notice timeline provisions included in Section 54.10 (a) (1) and (2) for its combined electricity and natural gas service contracts. Energy Rewards submits that the use of only the electric notice timeframe provision is reasonable, and will likely encourage customers taking combined service to not delay in making an affirmative choice to either remain with Energy Rewards, switch to one or more competitive suppliers or return to default service," Energy Rewards said.
