Reporting by Karen Abbott • kabbott@energychoicematters.com

Commonwealth Edison announced that residential and small commercial customers who purchase their electricity supply from the utility may switch to a retail electric supplier (RES) at any time.

If ComEd electricity supply customers choose to switch to a retail electric supplier, they will no longer be required to remain with ComEd for a minimum period of time before doing so, ComEd said.

ComEd noted that "a number" of communities have elected to suspend their municipal aggregation programs which, prior to this change, gave customers two months to select an alternative supplier before triggering a 12-month minimum stay on default service.
