BHE Default Service Rates to Decrease for Small, Medium Customers

Reporting by Paul Ring • ring@energychoicematters.com

Standard Offer electric rates for customers at Bangor Hydro-Electric (Emera Maine) will decrease starting in March, and the PUC appears to have selected 10-month supply contracts (through December 31, 2015), rather than 12-month contracts.

The PUC's order approving the Standard Offer contracts remains confidential, but new pricing has been posted for the BHE small and medium classes, and prices were only set through December 31, 2015. Presumably, the PUC elected to award 10-month supply contracts as outlined in the RFP rather than the standard 12-month contracts for which pricing was also sought. The shorter contracts, which eliminate the pricier months of January and February, were presumably selected due to lower risk premiums. It remains to be seen how the PUC will address January and February 2016 supply

For the BHE Small Customer Class, the Standard Offer rate will be 6.50422 ¢/kWh from March 31, 2015 to December 31, 2015. The current Standard Offer rate is 7.5760¢/kWh

The new BHE Medium Customer Class Standard Offer rates are as follows (¢/kWh):

Mar-15 7.7226
Apr-15 5.8256
May-15 5.1662
Jun-15 6.6140
Jul-15 6.5566
Aug-15 6.5262
Sep-15 5.7016
Oct-15 5.8280
Nov-15 6.8462
Dec-15 9.6050
