The Maine Public Utilities Commission formally announced that certain former customers of People’s Power and Gas, LLC will receive a credit on their electric bills beginning March 30 for an unauthorized service fee the company assessed in November and December of 2013.

A PUC order directing the refunds had been first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com in January

Beginning Monday, March 30, any former customer of People’s Power and Gas that paid this unauthorized fee will receive a full credit on their bill. Emera Maine is sending letters on behalf of the Commission to all customers that paid the fee, notifying them of the Commission’s investigation and of the pending credit to their bill. Customers who paid the fee do not need to do anything to receive the credit; Emera Maine will automatically apply the credit to their bill.

“The Commission’s rules to protect customers from this type of market abuse were effective and customers who paid these fees will be made whole,” said Commission Chairman Mark Vannoy. “The Commission continues to encourage a robust competitive marketplace for power supply and is hopeful that this issue does not impact people’s willingness to participate in the market.”

Emera Maine will apply credits to impacted customers’ bills automatically. Any person that paid these fees and is no longer a customer with Emera Maine should contact Emera Maine to receive a refund.
