Texas Lawmakers Seek Expedited Sharyland Rate Case, Ask That "Rollback" Of Rates Be Considered

Five Texas lawmakers have sent a letter to Texas Public Utility Commission Chair Donna Nelson asking that the Commission expedite a rate case at Sharyland Utilities, and also asked that the Commission consider "rolling back" Sharyland Utilities distribution rates to an earlier level.

Signing the letter were Senator Kel Seliger, Senator Charles Perry, Representative Brooks Landgraf, Representative Drew Darby, and Representative Dan Flynn

Under a prior stipulation, Sharyland Utilities is required to file a rate case by July 1, 2016. That stipulation further requires use of a 2015 test year. It would also require system-wide rates for all of Sharyland's service areas (Sharyland Utilities/Cap Rock and Sharyland McAllen)

Due to customer complaints which have exposed issues with the current rate allocations at Sharyland, Commissioners have been considering whether it would be beneficial that Sharyland be required to file its rate case as soon as practicable, potentially as soon as by April 30, 2016 (click here for story).

"Over the last year we have heard repeated complaints from constituents about the outrageously high transmission and distribution utility (TDU) charges from Sharyland Utilities. These rates were set by the Public Utility Commission (PUC) through a rate case after Sharyland bought CapRock Energy. While our constituents may have the ability to choose a retail electric provider offering a lower electricity rate, such relief is only minimal when the delivery charges from Sharyland are the highest in Texas. In a recent report issued by Public Utility Commission (PUC) staff, it is noted that distribution charges for Sharyland Utility customers are two to three times higher than that of other TDU's in ERCOT," the lawmakers wrote

"With this in mind, we request that all efforts be made to expedite a rate case with Sharyland Utilities. As a result of this rate case we also request that you consider rolling back Sharyland's rates to the level prescribed for 'Phase 1' of the settlement from Docket No. 41474. Moving forward, you must be diligent to ensure that all opportunities for rate relief for Sharyland customers are explored and considered," the lawmakers wrote
