State To Formally Roll Out "Electric Retail Supplier Exclusively Contracted by the State" Opt-in Affinity Program, Confirm Selected Supplier

Delaware is to formally announce today the selection of Direct Energy for an opt-in affinity program, under which Delaware Secretary of State Jeffrey Bullock will officially name Direct Energy as the "Electric Retail Supplier Exclusively Contracted by the State of Delaware."

Direct Energy's designation as the contracted supplier resulted from a legislatively directed process to conduct a competitive RFP for a state-implemented opt-in electricity supply affinity program open to residential and small business customers, which was designed to include a multi-year fixed price per kWh offer and value added products and services to help customers better manage their overall energy bills (click here for background)

EnergyChoiceMatters.com first reported in April the selection of Direct Energy for the program by the state's Electricity Affordability Committee, with the contracting process and marketing coordination being undertaken since that time.

As the "Electric Retail Supplier Exclusively Contracted by the State of Delaware", Direct Energy is able to use such branding in offering the products contemplated under its response to the RFP to 315,000 residents and small businesses in the Delmarva territory, as well as such customers at Delaware Electric Cooperative, which has 84,000 customers.

Direct Energy described the state-managed opt-in affinity program as a first of its kind. Direct Energy has supported legislation in Maryland that a similar program be studied (click here for story)

Though formal product and pricing details are to be unveiled today, it is expected that Direct's offer under the opt-in program will incorporate a generation 3 Nest Learning Thermostat
