Calpine "Doubling Down" on Serving Customers Directly With Generation, Plans Retail Growth
Calpine is continuing to "double down" on using its generation to directly serve customers, whether via retail or wholesale supply agreements, rather than using financial hedges, Calpine CEO Thad Hill said on Friday.
"We're continuing to double down on," Calpine's customer efforts, Hill said, as sales to customers, "provides more stability in cash flows at higher margins."
"In a time of change and difficult commodity environments, having the direct link to load and customer relationships as part of our business provides many benefits," Hill said
Hill said that Calpine plans to continue to grow its retail efforts through Champion.
"We also have actively sought to migrate our portfolio to more attractive assets in more competitive regions, and in a first time move, complemented our core generation business with Champion's retail sales channel. You should expect that we're almost continuously in discussions on both the buy and the sell side of opportunities. We think this active management truly differentiates us from others in the business. We will continue to be agile with how we position ourselves," Hill said
