Regulator To Host Policy Session on Retail Electric Suppliers & Consumer Protections

Illinois Commerce Commissioner Sadzi Martha Oliva will host the third installment of Illinois' Power Meter titled, "Retail Electric Suppliers: Best Practices & Consumer Protections", on Wednesday, March 21

This policy session will examine the recent amendments to the Commission’s Rules regarding the sales and marketing practices by Retail Electric Suppliers (RESs). The session will also highlight the best practices of RESs and key factors consumers should be aware of when engaging with RESs.

"With over 1.8 million residential customers receiving power from a Retail Electric Supplier, it is imperative that consumers are equipped with necessary tools to make informed choices and that RESs comply with relevant marketing and disclosure rules," explains Commissioner Sadzi Martha Oliva. "Dedicating a policy session to bring awareness to the tools and compliance standards helps to ensure that the intended effect of the Commission's rules reaches the consumer."

Panelists from the ICC, Illinois Competitive Association, Retail Electric Supply Association, and IGS Energy will discuss the rules and reporting on the regulatory and industry developments in light of the amendments, and will highlight business models related to telemarketing and door-to-door sales to ensure proper consumer engagement. Additionally, the Citizens Utility Board and AARP will share tips in Spanish, followed by the English translation, for consumers to utilize when working with and selecting a Retail Electric Supplier.
