Florida Energy Freedom Launching New Ballot Initiative To Open Florida To Retail Electric Supply Choice

Brad Nelson, senior analyst, regulatory affairs, for Infinite Energy, told attendees at the National Energy Marketers Association National Restructuring Conference that Florida Energy Freedom, Inc., a Florida Not For Profit Corporation, is launching a new ballot initiative in Florida to open the state to retail electric supply choice
The ballot initiative, which aims to qualify for the 2020 ballot, would amend the state's constitution to allow for retail choice, and follows an unsuccessful attempt to utilize a periodic state constitutional amendment process to open Florida to electric choice (see RetailEnergyX.com's story here)
As currently drafted, the ballot initiative would not compel municipal utilities to be subject to electric choice
A ballot initiative requires about 766,000 valid signatures to qualify for placement on the ballot.
Florida Energy Freedom estimated that a campaign to obtain the required number of signatures will cost about $10 million
Florida Energy Freedom will be forming a political committee in the coming months to sponsor the initiative, as required per law.
