The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC), which is a, "bi-county agency of the state of Maryland," applied for a Maryland natural gas license as a supplier/marketer eligible to serve commercial and industrial customers (as discussed below) at Washington Gas Light

WSSC provides water and wastewater service to 1.8 million residents through approximately 475,000 customer accounts in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties in Maryland

While WSSC is largely seeking the license to self-supply natural gas to supplement its own biogas production, WSSC said that it may also provide renewable natural gas supply, which it produces, to governmental agencies within its service territory

WSSC said that it, "intends to operate as a natural gas supplier to support its biogas production and cogeneration operations at Piscataway waste treatment plant."

"This bioenergy project is expected to commence commercial operations in the third quarter of 2021. The Piscataway bioenergy project will produce renewable natural gas (RNG) for injection into the WGL distribution system (operated by agreement with WGL that is currently under development), and consume natural gas for operations, including onsite 3 MW cogeneration plant," WSSC said

"WSSC plans to purchase excess site requirements in the wholesale gas market, and may provide RNG supply associated with Piscataway RNG production to governmental agencies within its service territory," WSSC said

"WSSC has no plans to broadly offer retail natural gas supply, otherwise," WSSC said
