Microsoft recently formed Microsoft Energy LLC, which has applied for electric market-based rate authority at FERC

"Microsoft Energy is a Washington limited liability company that intends to engage in power marketing through participating in the wholesale electric energy, capacity, and/or ancillary services markets in the United States," the company stated in its MBR application

"Microsoft has committed, by 2025, to shift to 100 percent supply of renewable energy by having power purchase agreements for green energy contracted for 100 percent of carbon emitting electricity consumed by all of Microsoft’s data centers, buildings and campuses. Microsoft Energy will assist Microsoft in achieving these aims by participating in the wholesale power markets and in managing the cost of energy for Microsoft in the United States," the company stated

Microsoft Energy noted that, while Microsoft and its affiliates purchase power at retail and are counterparties to certain virtual power purchase agreements (in which title to the physical power does not transfer to Microsoft or its affiliates, as applicable), Microsoft and its affiliates do not currently purchase any physical power for resale in the United States

Microsoft Energy requested approval to sell energy, capacity and certain ancillary services at market-based rates in all regions under FERC's jurisdiction
