New BP Retail Supplier Receives License In New State

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio granted BP Energy Retail LLC an electric supplier license to serve commercial, mercantile, and industrial customers in all service areas.

BP Energy Retail LLC's Ohio application had been first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com

In the Ohio application, in addition to selecting the customer classes and utility service areas noted above, BP Energy Retail stated, "The company’s principal business interest is acting as a competitive retail power marketer and natural gas marketer to commercial, mercantile, industrial, and muni aggregation customers within the state of Ohio."

In the Ohio application, BP Energy Retail stated, "BP Energy Retail LLC (BPER) proposes to serve Standard Offer Service [sic] load for Small and Large Commercial and Industrial customers within the state of Ohio," though the use of the term 'Standard Offer Service' is not believed to indicate that BP is only seeking to serve as a wholesale default service supplier, as no license is needed for such electricity sales in Ohio (and Ohio SSO load is not segmented by customer class).

As previously reported, BP Energy Retail said in a recent FERC filing that it will initially provide services in the following markets: Illinois, Ohio, Texas, California, and Pennsylvania, and is in the process of applying for, or has received, licenses in those states
