PJM EIS To Produce Energy Certificates Hourly

PJM Environmental Information Services, Inc. will provide, "hourly, time-stamped certificates for PJM generation starting in March 2023, answering the growing demand for procuring and tracking carbon-free energy around the clock," PJM EIS announced
PJM Environmental Information Services, Inc. (PJM EIS), a subsidiary of PJM Interconnection, LLC, manages the Generation Attribute Tracking System (GATS).
Currently, GATS produces certificates based on how much energy a resource produces in a month.
"Now GATS becomes the first registry in the U.S. to produce hourly, time-stamped certificates to reflect not only where, but the hour and date when energy is produced," PJM EIS said
Reacting to the announcement, Constellation said that the new hourly certificates provide a transparent and independent way for customers to certify that they are meeting their clean energy goals under hourly carbon-free energy matching retail plans, such as those offered by Constellation
"This advancement is enabling companies like Constellation to offer a more complete range of products that help customers meet their sustainability goals," said Kathleen Barrón, Constellation's chief strategy officer
"The new hourly energy attribute certificate functionality will support time-based carbon-free matching claims for energy suppliers and buyers in the PJM footprint by allowing users to retire Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) and Emission-Free Energy Certificates (EFECs) related to specific hours of carbon-free energy production. Existing REC and EFEC certificates are usually retired on an annual basis without considering where or when the energy was produced. Hourly solutions go beyond other programs that aggregate clean energy megawatts over time and give customers confidence that their electricity procurement is actually mitigating the emissions impact of their consumption," Constellation noted
