RESA Statement On Massachusetts Attorney General's Report

The Retail Energy Supply Association issued the following statement in response to a recent report from the Massachusetts Attorney General Office (AGO), and the AGO's continued efforts to end individual residential electric choice
"The demand for retail energy competition is evident in Massachusetts, as demonstrated by the 1.6 million residential customers who chose to switch to a third-party supplier last year. This is also supported by CleanChoice Energy’s 2021 poll by SurveyUSA, which found 79% of Massachusetts respondents want an alternative to the incumbent utility service. Additionally, it coincides with RESA’s National Survey in 2020, which said 74% of consumers want the ability to select their energy supplier. The desire for clean, renewable energy is also high, with 83% of Massachusetts customers indicating a preference for it," said Frank Caliva, RESA’s national spokesperson.
"For more than 20 years, residents in Massachusetts have enjoyed energy choice, despite the AGO wanting to eliminate this for residential customers. As in the prior three reports, the latest AGO report uses data and a methodology that is unverifiable and has not been able to be replicated by any industry expert to date. Additionally, the comparison doesn’t account for clean energy attributes, value-added products or services included within the price, or the inherent value in a long-term fixed-price product," Caliva said
"Unfortunately, this report narrowly looks at a timeframe nearly two years ago in which utility rates were in decline, but more recently, customers who shopped for electricity paid less than utility rates, some by as much as 50%, while also getting value-adds like 100% renewable energy, unlimited usage, and free products like smart home thermostats and EV chargers," Caliva said
"RESA continues to support meaningful improvements and reforms to the market. We have supported doing so at the Department of Public Utilities and in a reform bill currently under consideration by the legislature. RESA looks forward to working with the Attorney General to see these initiatives implemented, enabling and empowering customers to make the electricity choices that suit their lifestyle," Caliva said
