Major Residential Solar Company Seeks "Director, Retail Electric Business Development", Describes "New" Retail Business
The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
Sunnova, which describes itself as an, "Energy as a Service (EaaS) provider of solar, battery storage, EV charging, and other energy solutions," is seeking a Director, Retail Electric Business Development to help establish the foundation, "of our new business unit."
As further described below, the Sunnova job posting does repeatedly refer to a "partner" business model for retail energy, but also describes the business as "new" with an analysis of a "build" (as opposed to a partner) model for the business. Although Sunnova has partner service offerings with certain retail suppliers currently (including David Energy, background here), the job listing at the very least suggests a serious ramp-up in retail energy offerings from Sunnova, whether through additional partnerships, or through an internal "build"
"The Director, Retail Electric Business Development will be responsible for developing, communicating, and implementing Sunnova’s near and medium-term retail electric (aka grid power) strategy," the job post states
"The Director, Retail Electric Business Development will serve in a key position reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Energy Services and working with other senior leadership. Energy Services has one of the largest environmental and grid services portfolios in the industry, and this role will be a material accelerator of growth by opening new markets for this profitable department," the job post states
"The ideal candidate will have relevant residential retail electric supplier industry combined with business development experience. This combination will enable the individual to develop profitable partnership programs with grid power providers willing to partner with Sunnova to monetize grid services for the benefit of our customers," the job post states
The job post lists "retail electric business development responsibilities" as including, among other things:
• Business Unit Establishment: Takes the lead in setting up and developing the new business unit, including defining its mission, vision, and initial strategy
• · Builds, maintains and communicates data driven analysis of the grid power build vs partner business models values through time
Also notable, in terms of a build-versus-partner strategy, is that the position requires previous experience hedging or portfolio managing retail supply positions, and previous experience modeling or managing swing and shape risk
