Made To Order Retail Energy: Sheetz Formally Seeks Retail Electric Supplier License
The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
Sheetz Energy, Inc. has officially filed for a retail electric supplier license in Pennsylvania
The creation of Sheetz Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of the convenience store chain Sheetz, and its intent to serve residential electric customers, had been exclusively first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com in July
The Pennsylvania application for an EGS license as a retail electric supplier is believed to be the first such retail license application filed by Sheetz Energy, or at least the first application publicly posted
In Pennsylvania, Sheetz Energy applied for authority to serve all customer classes, including residential customers, in all service areas
However, in applying for residential authority, Sheetz Energy sought that the PUC accept as a condition of the grant of the retail supplier license that Sheetz will initially limit its service to commercial operations owned or operated by Sheetz, Inc.
Sheetz Energy proposed that, under this condition, Sheetz Energy would provide 90 days' notice to the PUC prior to extending service
beyond those customer cited above
Subject to the grant of an EGS license by such date, Sheetz Energy anticipates commencing retail energy service on November 1, 2024.
In a separate prior filing for FERC market-based rate authority, Sheetz Energy said that it intends to, "supply Sheetz, Inc. stores, carwashes, distribution centers, and corporate facilities in Pennsylvania and residents in Pennsylvania[.]"
Sheetz, which is known for "Made-to-Order food, premium coffee, [and] restaurant-style seating," has developed a "cult" following, with its dedicated patrons known as "Sheetz Freaks" (sometimes styled "Sheetz Freakz")
In Pennsylvania, Sheetz's presence and customer following is strongest in the western and central parts of the state (including the PPL service area), with limited coverage into the immediate Philadelphia region
Sheetz has had a fuels market share of 21% in Pennsylvania
Sheetz has approximately 700 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia, with plans to enter Michigan
As of 2023, Sheetz had 650 total electric vehicle chargers at 95 of its store locations
