Texas Retail Provider Offering Free Power During Renewable Energy Surges To Encourage Usage Shifts
The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
Octopus Energy in Texas has launched a new program that provides free energy supply to customers during times when renewable power is abundant, which the REP calls Flex Sessions
Octopus said, "During the first Flex Session, which ran from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on March 26, renewable energy flooded the ERCOT grid, allowing Octopus Energy to distribute nearly 2 MWh of free power."
During this event, participants used an additional 600 kWh compared to their baseline, Octopus said
All energy supply usage during a Flex Session is free. The customer is still charged the TDU volumetric charge during a Flex Session
"Customers saw savings of up to 20 percent on their average daily electricity usage in just one two-hour session," Octopus said
Octopus has initially offered the program on a pilot basis, and stated, "The pilot saw overwhelming success. Within just 24 hours, more than 50 percent of the 1,000 available spots were filled, and by the end of the week, nearly 90 percent of the pilot slots had been subscribed."
Octopus also offers Stretch Sessions which pays customers to reduce energy use during times of grid stress. Together, the Flex and Stretch programs are called Saving Sessions, and are offered as a package
Octopus will usually inform customers of an upcoming Saving Sessions event 24-48 hours before an event.
The Saving Sessions program is available to Octopus customers on a fixed-rate contract. Customers must opt into the program to participate
Customers need to opt-in to each session to earn a saving on their energy bill
