New York Gov. Says State, "Must Radically Increase [Power] Supply," As Gov. Directs NYPA To Develop 1 GW Of New Nuclear

New York Governor Kathy Hochul directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct a nuclear power plant in Upstate New York
"NYPA, in coordination with the Department of Public Service (DPS), will seek to develop at least one new nuclear energy facility with a combined capacity of no less than one gigawatt of electricity, either alone or in partnership with private entities, to support the state's electric grid and the people and businesses that rely on it," the Governor's office said in a press release
NYPA will immediately begin evaluation of "business models" for the nuclear plant, as well as an evaluation of technologies and locations, "and will secure the key partnerships needed for the project."
The Governor's press release included a statement from Independent Power Producers of New York President & CEO Gavin Donohue who said, "A competitive solicitation process for independent power producers to advance this project ensures transparency and innovation, delivering a reliable and affordable electric grid for all New Yorkers."
Hochul said during a news conference, per a rushed transcript, that, "if we don't increase our capacity over the next decade, we will see rolling blackouts and other disruptions. You see them in other states. We must radically increase supply starting now, and do it in a way that does not threaten our commitment to clean air and a clean environment, and ensure that New York remains a leader in the global fight against climate change."
