Retail Energy Revealed released a report stating that, "Since 2003, American households have paid at least more than $48 billion extra for electricity by switching from regulated utilities to competitive retail energy suppliers," for residential electricity

Retail Energy Revealed's report said that, "In 2024 alone, more than 11 million families paid $4 billion more than they would have paid had they stayed with their regulated utility's electricity."

The report generally relies on EIA 861 data

As discussed further below, the $4 billion figure includes a comparison of residential REP costs in ERCOT to El Paso Electric and Entergy rates in Texas, with such comparison accounting for $2.8 billion of the $4 billion total overpayment

Retail Energy Revealed's report lists the 2024 residential electric costs paid in excess of default service by state as follows:

Retail Energy Revealed's report states, concerning the use of El Paso Electric and Entergy Texas for a comparison of REP rates within ERCOT, that, "while both are in different RTOs, they offer a fair rate comparison."

Retail Energy Revealed did not include rates from Southwestern Public Service or SWEPCO in the Texas comparison

Retail Energy Revealed's report also lists the average residential rate charged by each retail supplier, by state, for 2024
