Texas REP Officially Launches Home Battery Backup Program At Austin Energy

Base has officially extended its home battery program to Austin Energy, following an announcement in May
Austin Energy has entered into an agreement with Base Power to deploy 40 MW of residential battery storage across the utility’s service territory
Under the agreement, Austin Energy will manage the resource by dispatching during peak demand to shave load and help manage wholesale energy prices. Base Power handles system installation and ongoing maintenance
Base costs $695 to install, plus $19 a month, which covers service and maintenance for the life of the battery.
Austin Energy customers who sign up for Base get a 40 kWh Base battery professionally installed on the outside of their home. The battery provides automatic, whole-home backup, switching over seamlessly when the power goes out and keeping a home running for up to 36 hours. It does not require solar but can integrate with it.
Customers are billed only for the energy their home uses and will be billed at their normal Austin Energy rates.
Since publicly launching in 2024, Base has installed batteries on more than 15,000 homes
The agreement between Austin Energy and Base stems from a February 2025 request for proposals for local battery storage. Under the agreement, Austin Energy is only contracting for battery capacity. Austin Energy is not involved in any agreements or billing between Base Power and its customers, and nothing will change about Austin Energy’s electric service, rates or billing.
