Octopus Energy Launches New Residential Time Of Use Plan In Texas
The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
Octopus Energy has debuted a new residential time of use electricity plan in Texas, called OctopusFlex
OctopusFlex is a two-tier TOU plan with a discounted electricity supply rate from 10 p.m. to 5:59 a.m. every day. The same TDU volumetric fee applies during all hours
Additionally, OctopusFlex has seasonal fixed rates, with one set of on-peak and off-peak fixed supply rates established for the periods of March 1 to June 1 and September 1 to December 1, and a separate set of on-peak and off-peak fixed supply rates established for the periods of June 1 to September 1 and December 1 to March 1
In the Oncor service area, OctopusFlex is offered as a 100% renewable, 12-month fixed rate with an average all-in rate, at 1,000 kWh monthly usage, of 15.4¢ per kWh. This rate reflects enrollment in autopay. A $5 monthly fee applies for customers not enrolling in autopay
The average price disclosure is based on the usage profile for the Oncor service area with 25% of
consumption occurring during seasonal high on-peak hours, 25% of consumption occurring
during the seasonal high off-peak hours, 25% of consumption occurring during seasonal low
on-peak hours, and 25% of consumption occurring during seasonal low off-peak hours.
The OctopusFlex 12-month plan at Oncor includes the following components, per an EFL accessed on June 19:
OctopusFlex permits integration of smart devices such as EV chargers and smart thermostats and automatically shifts such products' energy use to off-peak hours. Customers do not need to have a smart device to enroll onto OctopusFlex
Octopus's solar buyback and battery optimization through Intelligent Octopus for Home Batteries are not available for customers on OctopusFlex
Separately, Octopus also recently reported customer participation in its Stretch Sessions, which pay customers to reduce energy use, compared to a baseline, during times of grid stress (see more background here)
On May 28, Octopus had said that, since the launch of Stretch Sessions on April 2, Stretch Sessions pilot participants collectively saved 971 kWh
"By powering down between 6 P.M. and 8 P.M., participating households saved an average of 2.5 kWh per session," Octopus said
Nearly 60 percent of eligible customers opted into the Stretch Sessions program with 73 percent of participants actively reducing their energy usage during Stretch Sessions, Octopus said
