SOPEC Receives Power Broker License From PUCO
The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
The PUC of Ohio granted Southeast Ohio Public Energy Council d/b/a Sustainable Ohio Public Energy Council (SOPEC) an electricity power broker license to serve commercial, industrial, and mercantile customers
This newly granted power broker authority is distinct from SOPEC's ability to serve as an opt-out governmental aggregator. SOPEC serves as a municipal aggregator for dozens of Ohio communities, including Dayton and Cleveland, under a separate governmental aggregation authority.
Based on publicly available filings, PUCO appears to have granted the power broker license to SOPEC without formally addressing a motion to intervene filed by the Northeast Ohio Public Energy Council (NOPEC) in the SOPEC license proceeding
As previously reported (details here), NOPEC had raised various concerns with SOPEC's application, though most of NOPEC's concerns were focused on potential residential service by SOPEC under the power broker license
As previously reported, SOPEC filed a revised broker application under which SOPEC did not seek to serve residential customers as a power broker.
NOPEC's motion to intervene had included language that had stated, "NOPEC does not take a position on SOPEC’s potential provision of power brokerage services to industrial, commercial, or mercantile customers."
