Texas TDU *Won't* Offer Retail Electric Provider Smart Thermostat Program In 2026

Texas-New Mexico Power Company said in a planning year 2027 Energy Efficiency Plan and Report, filed at the Texas PUC, that TNMP will not introduce a retail electric provider Smart Thermostat Program for 2026
Under the originally contemplated REP smart thermostat program (which is offered at other TDUs), Texas retail electric providers are reimbursed under the TDU's energy efficiency budget for providing a smart thermostat to residential customers in TNMP's service area
The REP smart thermostat program is also not currently listed in TNMP's 2027 efficiency plan filed with the Texas PUC
TNMP cited a rule change, and an associated need to increase the budget for the Hard-To-Reach Standard Offer Program (HTR SOP), as necessitating the shelving of the REP smart thermostat program
"[D]ue to the need to increase the HTR SOP budget for
compliance with the savings goal per the amended rule, TNMP has elected to forego the REP Smart Thermostat Program and will not introduce any new residential programs in 2026," TNMP said in its filing
