With February Loss, Baltimore Gas & Electric Sees End to 35 Consecutive Months of Competitive Supply Growth Among Residential Customers

During February, the number of residential electric customers on competitive supply at Baltimore Gas & Electric declined, marking the end of 35 consecutive months of growth in residential shopping, according to the latest data from the Maryland PSC.

From the end of January to the end of February, BGE saw the number of residential electric customers on competitive supply fall by 900 accounts. It's the first net decline in residential shopping at BGE in 35 months.

From the end of January to the end of February, the number of total residential distribution accounts at BGE decreased by approximately 1,350.

For comparison, during the month of January, BGE had seen the number of residential customers on competitive supply increase by about 1,500 accounts.

BGE had not seen the number of residential customers on competitive supply decline during a month since February 2009, when the number of residential accounts served by retail suppliers was only 26,000, a mere tenth of the total number of residential accounts shopping in February 2012 (261,500).

The monthly growth in residential shopping at BGE since February 2009 had been as follows:

Among the Maryland distribution companies, Potomac Edison (FirstEnergy) saw the largest growth in the number of residential accounts on competitive supply during February, with net growth of 642 residential shoppers during the month, versus the growth of 718 competitively served residential accounts during January.

At Pepco, the number of residential electric customers on competitive supply increased by 536 accounts during February, versus the January growth of 560 accounts.

Delmarva rebounded from several months of marginal declines in residential shopping, with net growth 200 residential customers on competitive supply during February. In January, Delmarva had seen the number of residential customers on competitive supply fall by 7.
