North American Power Readies Gas Market Entry in Seven Markets, Seeks Additional License

North American Power has received licenses to sell natural gas at retail in two states, and yesterday applied for its third gas marketer license.

Specifically, North American Power is licensed as a retail natural gas supplier in New York and New Jersey.

Yesterday, it applied for an Ohio natural gas supplier license to serve all customer classes at all service areas.

As previously reported, North American Power had said last fall that it was preparing to launch natural gas service in 2012.

Bill Kinneary, President of North American Power, told Matters that the company plans to initiate natural gas service this summer at PSE&G, New Jersey Natural Gas, South Jersey Gas, KeySpan New York, KeySpan Long Island, Consolidated Edison, and Orange & Rockland, with the start dates dependent on the completion of utility testing.

Notably, given its initial gas markets, North American Power recently signed a sponsorship agreement with the New York Yankees, as previously reported. North American Power already offers electricity at PSE&G, ConEd, and O&R, as well as at Jersey Central Power & Light and Atlantic City Electric.

Consistent with its electric business model, Kinneary said that North American Power will focus gas marketing on the residential markets but expects to be active in the small commercial markets as well.

"North American Power is very excited about our natural gas plans and we plan to expand into Ohio and many other states and LDC territories as the opportunity arises," Kinneary said.
