Glacial Energy has begun offering residential electricity service in Michigan.
Specifically, Glacial is accepting enrollments from residential customers at Detroit Edison and Consumers Energy.
Due to the 10% cap applicable to electric choice, which is currently fully subscribed at Detroit Edison and Consumers Energy, Glacial will place enrolled residential customers in the queue to take choice service if or when an allotment becomes available.
"Glacial Energy's move to service residential customers comes at a critical time for Michigan," said Terry Hart, Glacial Energy's Senior Vice President for Michigan. "Currently, Michigan has the highest utility rates in the Midwest and for the first time ever, rates higher than the national average. With Glacial Energy, customers have a cost competitive alternative to standard service."
Glacial's Michigan website encourages customers to contact their legislators to support recently filed bills which would increase the choice cap. The site also includes education concerning the cap, the 2008 legislation, and increase in electric rates since that time.
Glacial is offering residential customers a fixed and variable rate option.
Glacial's enrollment website says that the customer's fixed monthly price will be determined when an energy allotment is available for the customer. At that time, the customer will be informed of the price via email and will have three days to confirm acceptance of the fixed price via web response. If the customer does not respond within three days of the email or if Glacial Energy is unsuccessful in contacting the customer, service will begin on Glacial Energy's variable month-to-month rate. Such customers would be able to switch to a fixed rate at any time.
The first 5,000 customers who enroll with Glacial Energy for a fixed rate will receive their first month of electricity free, once they become Glacial Energy customers.
Fixed products include an early cancellation fee of $50 if the fixed term is 12 months or less, or $100 if the fixed term exceeds 12 months.
