Commonwealth Edison reported yesterday that more than 1.5 million ComEd residential customers have switched to an alternative retail electricity supplier.

As first reported by Matters, the Illinois Commerce Commission's recently posted migration snapshot as of September 30, 2012, which only tacks customers billed on competitive supply (and thus reflects a lag by not capturing new enrollments not yet billed) had pegged ComEd residential migration at just over 1 million accounts.

"By far the driving force behind this growth has been municipal aggregation," ComEd said.

To date, more than 930,000 customers from nearly 150 municipalities have switched to a new supplier as a result of municipal aggregation alone, ComEd said.

ComEd reported that approximately 1.2 million customers will have the opportunity to vote on municipal aggregation referendums on election day.

The City of Chicago and about 60 other municipalities on Nov. 6 will consider referendums on whether to pursue municipal aggregation.
