Hope Springs Eternal: All Pennsylvania EDCs Actually See Weekly Growth in Residential Shopping

For the first time in April, all of the seven major electric distribution companies in Pennsylvania saw growth in the number of residential customers on competitive supply, according to the latest stats from the Pennsylvania PUC.

For the past three weeks, at least two EDCs each week had reported a backslide in residential shopping.

But the reprieve might be short-lived. Two of the EDCs -- PPL and West Penn Power -- saw negligible residential shopping growth of under 100 accounts, which barely outpaces the natural churn in customer move-outs and move-ins (the latter of which, by current tariff, must take default service)

Specifically, the weekly net growth (loss) in residential shoppers at each utility from about April 18 to April 24 (reporting date varies slightly by utility) was as follows:

Duquesne Light 332
Met-Ed 1,296
PECO 682
Penelec 393
Penn Power 103
PPL 13
West Penn Power 96

From about April 18 to April 24, the state, in aggregate, saw growth in residential shopping of only 2,900 accounts, essentially flat versus the week-ago growth of 2,800 accounts.
