While still high, support for electricity competition in New England has declined versus the year-ago, according to an annual region-wide telephone survey sponsored by the New England Energy Alliance.

The drop in support for electric competition was nearly 10 percentage points versus the year-ago.

According to the latest poll, 76% of New Englanders continue to favor a restructured competitive electricity market system where companies compete on price and service, down from 84% last year.

Some 84% of respondents were either "very concerned" (55%) or "somewhat concerned" (29%) that, "New England businesses pay over 30% more for electricity than the national average." ISO New England imposes a forward capacity obligation, cleared through a centralized market, on all load serving entities in New England, with such costs passed through to customers.

Over one-third of respondents oppose smart meters.
