PSC Limits Supplier's License to Non-Residential Service, Presumably Due to Complaint Concerns

The Maryland PSC granted Discount Power, Inc. an electric supplier license, but limited the authority granted under the license to serving commercial and industrial customers.

In its original application submitted in February 2014, Discount Power had been seeking to serve all customer classes.

The PSC invited Discount Power to amend its license authority to include residential customers after six months of operating in Maryland.

Although a PSC letter order did not cite any specific reason for limiting the license to non-residential service at this time, such limitation presumably has to do with concerns regarding complaints against Discount Power in other states, an issue which had been raised by the People's Counsel in comments on the application.

The PSC's letter order did direct Discount Power to provide reports to the Commission Staff detailing the type and number of complaints in Maryland at six month and twelve month intervals after beginning its Maryland operations.
