Brokers are among the competitors retail energy suppliers will need to deal with in the future, Daniel Verbanac, Senior Vice President for Retail at Constellation, said during DNV GL's Energy Executive Forum

As the retail energy industry moves beyond simply providing commodity to providing additional services, Verbanac listed retail energy suppliers' major competitors in the coming years as including existing suppliers, companies (such as Apple and Google) in adjacent industries, and companies that capitalize on big data from smart meters.

Leveraging big data could transform the residential market in the same way smartphones, Amazon, and Uber did in their respective industries, Verbanac said

Verbanac also cited brokers as a competitor to suppliers as service moves beyond just the commodity

"Some of the brokers don't allow us to have that customer relationship, so I think we're going to be competing with them for those customer relationships so that we can deliver the products beyond commodity," Verbanac said
