Retail Supplier Reports Service Offering Did Not Gain Enough Market Share To Be Economically Viable, Shifts Strategy

Green Mountain Energy Company (GMEC) filed at the Georgia PSC to, "change the name of GMEC to 'NRG Business Marketing, LLC'" (or rather the name on GMEC's current gas marketer certificate) and to make related changes to Green Mountain Energy Company's current marketer certificate in light of Green Mountain Energy Company's previously reported exit from the residential natural gas market in Georgia.
Green Mountain Energy Company's exit from the Georgia residential natural gas market had been first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com earlier this year
In a filing at the Georgia PSC, Green Mountain Energy Company stated of its residential offering, "GMEC’s service offering did not gain enough market share to be economically viable."
"As a result, GMEC desires to amend its Certificate to pursue a different business plan which directs its attention to larger commercial customers and rebrands its service offerings to more closely identify its natural gas service with its parent company, NRG Energy, Inc.," Green Mountain Energy Company stated in the filing
Green Mountain Energy Company, as NRG Business, specifically sought to amend its Georgia marketer license to include service to large commercial and industrial customers, in addition to its current small commercial authority
NRG Business also sought authorization to serve both firm and interruptible customers
While NRG Business will seek to remove residential authority on the certificate once it completes service to legacy residential customers, NRG Business did not seek to remove residential authority in the instant filing.
Green Mountain Energy Company stated, "GMEC intends to exit providing service to residential customers. Currently, GMEC serves Residential Variable Rate customers. In the future when all residential customers have exited from GMEC, the company will file a petition with the Commission to amend its Certificate to remove residential service. At that time, the Company will request that all reporting requirements related to residential service be removed."
However, NRG Business did request at this time that the PSC approve that NRG Business will no longer take on new residential customers
Furthermore, NRG Business requested that the Commission list on its webpage that NRG Business is "Commercial Only".
"If any of the remaining residential customers are still receiving service at the time the Commission approves this current petition, NRG Business will continue to provide gas service and comply with all Commission Rules related to Residential Service," NRG Business said
As previously reported by ECM, Green Mountain Energy Company already received a waiver from a standard rate posting requirement applicable to suppliers serving residential customers
Multiple other NRG-owned retail suppliers continue to offer residential natural gas service in Georgia (specifically, Stream Energy and Xoom Energy had residential rates listed on the PSC's March monthly rate chart)
