Pa. Governor Names Former Maryland People's Counsel Senior Assistant As Special Counsel for Energy Affordability

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro announced the appointment of Mark Szybist to serve as Special Counsel for Energy Affordability, a newly created position
Immediately before assuming his current position with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Szybist served as a Senior Assistant People’s Counsel at the Maryland Office of People’s Counsel
Shapiro's office described Szybist as the Commonwealth's, "newest watchdog to prevent utility companies from unreasonably raising costs for Pennsylvanians."
Shapiro's office stated that Szybist will, "advance the Shapiro Administration’s comprehensive strategy to stop utility companies from unfairly increasing their rates and needlessly raising costs for Pennsylvanians."
As first reported by EnergyChoiceMatters.com, Shapiro, during a budget address, recently said that "PECO, Duquesne Light, First Energy, and PPL" will work with the Shapiro Administration and the General Assembly, "to enact commonsense reforms that will ban deceptive contracts by retail providers which could save Pennsylvanians hundreds of millions of dollars."
Szybist stated, "I have spent my career standing up for consumers and as Special Counsel, I will work hard alongside partners like the Pennsylvania Office of Consumer Advocate to hold utility companies accountable and protect Pennsylvanians from needless cost increases."
Szybist has more than 20 years of legal and policy experience in public utility, climate, and clean energy law
Szybist previously served as Pennsylvania clean energy policy director for the Natural Resources Defense Council. Szybist also previously served as Staff Attorney for Citizens for Pennsylvania’s Future
