BGE Proposes Prepay Pilot
Baltimore Gas & Electric has proposed the creation of pre-pay pilot as part of a series of recommended uses for the Customer Investment Fund created as a result of the merger of Constellation and Exelon. Specifically, BGE proposes conducting a pilot of 1,000 customers with smart meters, focused on the residential market. "A prepay program is one where a customer pays for its energy in advance, in this instance, online or via a smart phone application, as well as at physical locations. There are web and smart device interfaces and the application can provide 'Real Time' information from the smart meter, providing customers with more control of energy usage. Pilots elsewhere in the U.S. have shown to result in energy savings of 5% to 12%," BGE said.
