Migration to competitive electric supply at Dayton Power & Light (DP&L) was 56% of load as of the end of June 2012, up from 53% in the first quarter and in line with management expectations, executives from The AES Corporation said during an earnings call yesterday.

DP&L's competitive affiliate, DPL Energy Resources, captured more than 78% of such migrated load through the second quarter, which is even with its share as of the first quarter of 2012, executives said.

Executives said that DPL Energy Resources and MC Squared Energy Services are "rapidly" expanding in markets beyond DP&L's service territory.

The two retail suppliers are now serving more than 140,000 customers outside of the DP&L territory, representing annual usage of about 2.5 million megawatt-hours. AES said that this growth more than offsets 70,000 customers and 2.1 million megawatt-hours that have switched to unaffiliated third parties on DP&L's system.

Overall, for 2012, AES projects that the two retail suppliers will serve approximately 200,000 customers, with combined annual retail sales of 8 million megawatt-hours.

Commenting on the competitive retail expansion, Andrew Vesey, AES Chief Operating Officer of Global Utilities, said, "We have to be aggressive because it's a very intense, competitive environment, and it's a game that we're going to play in very hard."
