Reliant Energy Expects Illinois, Massachusetts Residential Entry by Year-End

Reliant Energy yesterday officially announced its offering of residential electricity in the Northeast, as first reported by Matters three months ago.

Specifically, Reliant Energy officially rolled out residential service in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. As previously reported, residential service in the District of Columbia is also available for customers calling Reliant, but it was not included in the formal roll-out.

Although Northeast customers will start to see more from Reliant, the company has not yet begun active marketing in the Northeast, said Pat Hammond of Reliant Energy.

As previously noted, parent NRG Energy's sponsorship agreement with FedEx Field in Maryland includes a component for all of its brands, including Reliant (see 7/14).

As only reported by Matters, Reliant said that its intent is to offer residential service in all of its active commercial markets, and Hammond confirmed that Reliant expects to offer residential service in Illinois and Massachusetts by year-end. Absent a further license amendment, the Illinois service would be limited to Commonwealth Edison.

Reliant is also seeking an amendment to its Delaware license to serve residential customers, and has electric applications pending to serve all customer classes in New York and Connecticut.

Separately, Reliant previewed a new logo and brand at this weekend's Texans' pre-season game, under which the company will simply be known as "Reliant." The new brand won't officially be put into use until the start of the NFL season in September.
