Gulf Oil has formally launched residential and commercial electric supply plans in Massachusetts, following its entry into the Maine electric market last month.

Gulf Electricity's Massachusetts entry had been first reported in Matters. Gulf Electricity had previously offered Massachusetts electric supply to commercial customers on a limited basis, including powering Fenway Park.

Gulf Electricity is currently offering a variable rate of 6.6 cents per kWh for residential customers at Nstar, National Grid, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company.

Affiliate Cumberland Farms has over 50 convenience stores in the Boston area alone, and more stores and Gulf-branded gas stations are located throughout the state. Each of the 11 service plazas on the Massachusetts Turnpike features a Gulf fueling station.

Customers enrolling by the end of the year will be entered into a contest with one grand prize winner receiving a year of free Gulf Electricity, and four monthly winners receiving a month of free Gulf Electricity.

"The expansion of Gulf Electricity into Massachusetts is part of the company's ongoing strategy to diversify its energy offerings and provide the marketplace with cost-effective, efficient energy options," the company said.

"More than one million customers pass through a facility supplied or branded by Gulf every day and we look forward to providing yet another valuable service to them," said Gulf Oil's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Rick Dery.

"Gulf's move into the electricity marketplace is a natural complement to our existing businesses. There is no change in power quality or reliability with Gulf Electricity, our expertise in sourcing and distributing energy efficiently enables us to give consumers the opportunity to receive savings from a respected and trusted supplier," said Gulf Oil President Ron Sabia.
